Due to the fact that these buildings, like the one in Lago Maracaibo, are erected on piles above the water's surface, they are also referred to as stilt houses. The name Venezuela was given to the stilt homes on Lake Maracaibo, which is a very intriguing fact. As soon as the conquistadors arrived in Venezuela and saw the stilt homes, they were reminded of Venice and chose to call the country "Little Venezia," or what we now know as Venezuela.
